The modern pistachio nut was first cultivated in Western Asia, where it has long been an important crop in cooler parts of Iran.
Iran is the world largest producer of pistachio. In 2005, Iran produced 190,000 tonnes of Pistachio.
In 1998-99 the export of Iran’s pistachio was $416 million.
